The Student Bar Association (SBA) is the student group for all University of Washington law students. SBA serves two major functions. The group advocates for student concerns at the law school, and acts to promote more social interaction at the law school. Although the SBA sponsors or co-sponsors many events throughout the year, an important annual event is the spring gala. This year it was held at the Canal on the Ballard Locks, on April 25, 2009.

At this community-building event the SBA honors law school community members with a variety of awards. These include the Philip Trautman Professors of the Year, the Mary Starr Staff Person of the Year, the Charles Z. Smith Public Interest Students of the Year, and the Student Organization of the Year.
