Immigrants Day at the Capitol with One America
Immigrant Taxpayers are the 99%
At Immigrants' Day at the Capitol, Thursday, January 26,OneAmerica and 400+ immigrants and friends converged on the legislature in Olympia WA to call for investments in core services and smart policies that support and recognize the contribution of immigrants, unlike the divisive, anti-immigrant legislation introduced in other state legislatures. Two of the top policy priorities were speaking out against E-Verify and pushing for a state Voting Rights Act, both vital bills for immigrant communities. HB2568 would prohibit mandatory implementation of E-Verify—a flawed program that costs workers jobs. The Washington State Voting Rights Act (VRA) would provide an equal opportunity for minority voters to influence elections when a combination of at-large voting systems and “racially-polarized voting” make it nearly impossible—statistically—for minority candidates to be elected to local office.
