Immigration Reform Rally April 10, 2010
On April 10, 2010 at Occidental Park in Seattle WA, several thousand people gathered in support of comprehensive immigration reform. Speakers included "greeters" who welcomed rally particpants in languages as diverse as Korean, Tigrinia, Urdu, Hmong, Arabic, Spanish and Maam. Rep. Jim McDermott, Mayor Mike McGinn and King County Executive Dow Constantine were there in person to address the crowd while Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell both appeared via pre-recorded messages. Duwamish Tribe Chairperson Cecile Hansen addressed the crowd as did We Are One America Executive Director Pramila Jayapal. Emcees Jorge Baron and Lua Pritchard kept the energy high. Additional speakers represented labor communities, business communites, community activists, youth and the formerly detained.
The challenge is before us all now: in this country of immigrants will welcome new immigrants and treat them fairly? Will we keep families together? Do we value human rights?
