LELO 30th Anniversary
A Legacy of Equality, Leadership & Organizing (LELO) recognized the 30th anniversary of the murders of Silme Domnigo and Gene Viernes at its annual awards event on July 3, 2011. The theme was Global Activism and the Dtruggle for Philippine Democracy. A reception featured Filipino American artists and music by Thirsty Love. Performances by Bengie Santos,Victor Noriega and the Seattle Labor Chorus inpired everyone. Attendees viewed Sharon Marda's documentary "A vWork in Progress," about the ongoing effort to obtain justice for the murders fo Domindo & Viernes.
Guests were honored to hear guest speaker The Honorable Walden Bello from the Phillipines. An author, activist and academic, Bello now sits as a member of Congress in the Philippines' House of Representatives where he serves as the political party Akbayan's second nominee. It was also an honor to be present as community leaders Yuki Llchacasurin and Will Parry received the John Caughlan outh Award and the Domnigo, Viernes & Jefferson Award respectively.
The event ended with more music featuring the KDP/CAMDI Singers and memebers of the Seattle Labor Chorus.
