Paddle to Suquamish: Tribal Canoe Journey 2009
This event marked the 20th anniversary of the historical 1989 “Paddle to Seattle” which was the first traditional intertribal canoe voyage in over a hundred years, leaving the shores of Suquamish for Seattle. This year numerous tribes left their ancestral home shores to travel a 1-3 week journey ending at the host tribe of Suquamish. Native American Canoe Project Coordinator Emmett Oliver, the founder of the original Paddle to Seattle, was on hand for the protocols. Events took place in the Suquamish House of Awakened Culture where songs and prayers filled the air.
Another amazing journey. Next year: Neah Bay, WA, 2010.
